On Monday, July 23rd, 2012, Lonnie Schlein arrived in North Bay from his home in New York with a carload of photographs for his exhibition at the WKP Kennedy Gallery. We unloaded over sixty pieces, and thus began a week of intensive work and preparations in anticipation for his opening reception. By Thursday afternoon, everything was perfectly in place, and we were ready.
Friday evening, the gallery began to fill, and well-known local photographer,
Liz Lott, was on hand to document the event.
Here a young couple discusses The Women of Umoja, Kenya, where a group of women smile for a group photo. Umoja is a relatively new village made up of mostly women who left their homes and abusive men. It is a remarkable story, and the photograph gives testimony to these women's will and determination to have a happy and peaceful life.
At 8:00 p.m., Mr. Schlein gave a talk about his experience as photo-editor of The New York Times and his life-long interest in photography.
It was a busy night during the reception, and Mr. Schlein gave at least three interviews, one of which was with Jamie Lyle of Cogeco Cable Television.
Nick Dubecki, a well-known photographer from Sudbury, travelled to North Bay to attend the reception and to meet and chat with Mr. Schlein. Here he is seen at the refreshment table with the gallery director, Dermot Wilson.
Several representatives of major arts funding organizations were in town for the Funder's Forum organized by the Nipissing Arts Council, including Bushra Junaid of the Ontario Arts Council.
Lonnie Schlein, and curator of the exhibition, Michelle LaRiviere, pose for photos at the end of the evening.
Dave Barker, president of the Capitol Centre's Board of Directors asks about a particular photograph. The Capitol Centre for the Arts is the parent organization of the WKP Kennedy Gallery.
